I’ve got plenty of John Prine on CD… but I recently found a thrifty version of his 1973 album Sweet Revenge.
Prine released eight records pre-CD but this was the first time I’ve ever come across a John Prine vinyl record. It appeared to be in good shape and, for $1.00, how could I resist?
Prine’s gift for observation, a wry wit and love of a tail turned are on full display here. But also some cynicism slipping in to the title track… a poke back at critics? The music industry?
I saw Prine in the mid 90s at the beautiful Myrna Loy Center in in Helena, Montana. Just him, the singing mailman, and his guitar. The show was half song and half story, just as it should be. The only live song here, Dear Abby, brought that memory flooding back.
