With nearly 100 records to his credit, jazz keyboard player Jimmy Smith is nothing if not prolific. To call him a keyboardist is a bit of a misnomer… Smith was an early champion of the Hammond B-3 electric organ and was one of the greatest influences on the progressive rock keyboardists of the ‘60s.
My only vinyl example of Smith is a VG+ copy of the 1967 compilation Jimmy Smith Plays The Standards:
You have to really be a fan of the Hammond B-3 to like this record. Here’s an example of the song Deep Purple that is included on my record… was this mid ‘50s version the one that inspired a name change for an as yet unformed British band?
